Bottomless Pit – “That the expression “bottomless pit” represents the earth in a state of confusion and darkness is evident from other scriptures.” GC 658

Bottomless Pit - The bottomless pit is a symbol for a set of circumstances that prohibits a nation, church, or philosophical system from being able to influence people. Arising from the bottomless pit means that an entity is now able to influence people where as before they were unable to. In Revelation 20:1-3 the Bible reports that Satan is thrown into the bottomless pit and bound for a thousand years. In GC 658 "Bottomless pit" is identified as "a state of confusion and darkness." "Here (Earth in its destroyed state) is to be the home of Satan with his evil angels for a thousand years. Limited to the earth, he will not have access to other worlds to tempt and annoy those who have never fallen. It is in this sense that he is bound: there are none remaining, upon whom he can exercise his power. He is wholly cut off from the work of deception and ruin which for so many centuries has been his sole delight." GC 659. During this period of time Satan is in the bottomless pit. Revelation 20:7-8 Satan is loosed, or he rises from the bottomless pit (see Revelation 9:1-2, 11; 11:7; 17:8). This loosing, or rising from the bottomless pit, means that he now has power, or access to people, to deceive or influence again. This is verified in Revelation 11:7. The beast that rises from the bottomless pit is Atheistic France, symbolized by Sodom and Egypt (See Beast from the Bottomless Pit). Atheism rises from the bottomless pit because she then (1798) had power to influence people since she had given the papacy a death wound. She would continue to influence people until the king of the north would overthrow her in Daniel 11:40-42. Then this beast would retreat to the bottomless pit of not being able to influence. This is also the case for the papacy in Revelation 17:8. She came up out of the bottomless pit because she could not influence people (see flooding and overflowing) while experiencing the death wound given her by France in 1798. When her wound is completely healed she will be able to arise out of the bottomless pit, like her lord, in Revelation 20:7-8, and will be able to influence, flood, persecute. CO.

He is wholly cut off from the work of deception and ruin which for so many centuries has been his sole delight.” GC 659
