Smoke – A symbol used in many ways. It can be a symbol of judgment, or God’s presence, rebellion, or incense and glory. It can be a testimony of blessing or displeasure. Smoke can testify of something happening of God or a sign of confusion and death. CO

Smoke - Between the cherubim was a golden censer. And as the prayers of the saints in faith came up to Jesus, and he offered them to his Father, a sweet fragrance arose from the incense. It looked like smoke of most beautiful colors.  I SG 158

 

Sodom and Gomorrah – Sodom and Gomorrah were two cities near each other in the plain of Jordan. These two cities are the type of all cities in rebellion against the will of God. Sodom is the city of leadership and Gomorrah is the city of followers. Isaiah 1:9-10 These cities are referred to all through Scripture and God wants us to learn from them and not repeat their mistakes. CO

          Location:

Sodom and Gomorrah were on the borders of  the Canaanites. Genesis 10:19

Sodom and Gomorrah were a well watered place – like the Garden of the Lord. Genesis 13:10

          Gospel presented to:

Abraham intercedes for them with God. Genesis 18:20-33

Sodom and Gomorrah defeated in battle and Abram comes to rescue and restore them. Genesis 14:1-12.

The two angels go to investigate the sins of Sodom and by nity with Gomorrah as well. Genesis 19

Moral description of:

God comes to investigate their cry because it has come up before God.

Sodom and Gomorrah are viewed Biblically as united with each other. Genesis 18:20

Sodom did not try to hide it’s evil but declared it openly. Isaiah 3:8-9

They are viewed as very wicked and their sin is great. Genesis 13:13; 18:20

Sins of:

Abundance of idleness. Ezekiel 16:49

Did not help the poor and needy. Ezekiel 16:49

Encourage evildoers. Jeremiah 23:14

Fullness of bread. Ezekiel 16:49

Practiced adultery. Jeremiah 23:14

Pride. Ezekiel 16:49

Sodom and Gomorrah were not ashamed of their sins and their faces proclaimed their sins, they did not attempt to hide it. Isaiah 9:8-9

The doctrine of Sodom and Gomorrah is full of bitterness and gall. Deuteronomy 32:32

Walk in lies. Jeremiah 23:14

God’s response to:

God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah when life appeared to be going on as normal, so it will be at the second coming. Luke 17:26-33

God destroys Sodom and Gomorrah after their investigative judgment. Genesis 19

God threatens Israel that He will overthrow them like Gomorrah if they do not repent. Deuteronomy 29:23

God turned Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes by eternal fire. Jude 7; II Peter 2:6

Application to others:

Babylon equated to Sodom and Gomorrah. Isaiah 13:1-22; Jeremiah 50:40

Edom compared to Sodom and Gomorrah Jeremiah 49:18

God equates Sodom and Gomorrah to rebellious Israel. Deuteronomy 32:32; Isaiah 3:8-9; Ezekiel 16:44-59

Israel is like Sodom and Gomorrah except for a remnant. Isaiah 1:9-10

Israel, in rebellion, was like Sodom and Gomorrah – their vine was as Sodom and their field like Gomorrah. Deuteronomy 32:28-32

Moab compared to Sodom and Gomorrah. Zephaniah 2:9

Sodom, Egypt, Jerusalem types of the religious experience of France during the revolution when it hated truth. Revelation 11:8

Will be more tolerable to Sodom and Gomorrah than Capernaum due to more light coming to Capernaum. Matthew 10:15; 11:23-24; Mark 6:11; Luke 10:12

 

Sodom – Revelation 11:8 – “The great city” is also compared, “spiritually,” to Sodom. The corruption of Sodom in breaking the law of God was especially manifested in licentiousness. And this sin was also to be a pre-eminent characteristic of the nation that should fulfill the specifications of this scripture….This prophecy has received a most exact and striking fulfillment in the history of France (during the French revolution).” GC 269

 

Son - foolish - "A foolish son is the heaviness of his mother." Proverbs 10:1

 

Sons of God – Those people who follow God by faith. CO

Those led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. Romans 8:14

As many as received Him (by faith) to them He gave power to become sons of God, even to them that believe on His name. John 1:12

God works out His good will to make people harmless and blameless – sons of God. Philippians 2:13-15

Sons of God are those who will know Jesus at His second coming. I John 3:1-2

 

Also called “children of God by faith in Christ Jesus” Galatians 3:26

Another way of calling these people is “Abraham’s seed” Galatians 3:27-29. A listing of these people can be found in Hebrews 11 for all of these people are followers of God by faith. CO

Sons of God are also capable of becoming unequally yoked with non-believers which will turn ones heart away from God as referenced in Genesis 6:2-4 see also Exodus 34:16; Deuteronomy 7:1-4; 17:14-17; I Kings 11:1-9; Ezra 9:1-4; Nehemiah 13:23-29; II Corinthians 6:14

Sons of God is a reference to angels at the creation and to those who come to special gatherings of God. Job 38:1-7; 1:6; 2:1; GC 518

 

Son of perdition- “…represents the papacy.” GC 356

 

Son - wise - "Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father." Proverbs 28:7

 

Sons of Belial – “But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:” II Samuel 23:6

 

Sons of the prophets- “In the accomplishments of this object Samuel gathered companies of young men who were pious, intelligent, and studious. These were called the sons of the prophets.” PP 593; ED 46

 

Song of the Lamb – “The second theme will be the song of the Lamb, the song of grace and redemption.” TM 433

 

Sorcery - Sorceress - Sorcerers - "To whisper; to enchant" Strong's concordance. Displays of supernatural power given by Satan with the intent to deceive people and to encourage them to rebel against God and to participate in abominations. CO

Sorcerers in contests with God and His representatives and they always come up short - Joseph, Moses, and Daniel. Genesis 41:1-45; Exodus 7:8-14,19-22; 8:5-7,16-19; 9:11; Daniel 1:20; 2:1-28; 4:1-37; 5:1-30

Babylon trusts in wickedness and lies, and all those kinds of people who practice wickedness and lies - the sorcerers - Isaiah 47:1-15; Revelation 18:23

Sorcerers are always in conflict with God's prophets - Jeremiah 27:1-11

Sorcerers are any group of people who persecute, oppress, turn people from the truth, and do not fear God - Malachi 3:5

Sorcerers are one of the groups that will not be in the holy city of Jerusalem - Revelation 9:20-21; 21:8; 22:15

Sower – Matthew 13:24-30 – “He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man.” Matthew 13:37

The figure of spewing out of his mouth means that He cannot offer up your prayers or your expression of love to God. He cannot endorse your teaching of His word or your spiritual work in anywise. Spirit – “Our personal identify is preserved in the resurrection, though not the same particles of matter or material substance as went into the grave. The wondrous works of god are a mystery to man. The spirit, the character of man, is returned to God, there to be preserved. In the resurrection every man will have his own character. God in His own time will call forth the dead, giving again the breath of life, and bidding the dry bones live. The same form will come forth, but it will be free from disease and every defect. It lives again bearing the same individuality of features, so that friend will recognize friend. There is no law of God in nature which shows that God gives back the same identical particles of matter which composed the body before death.
